About Caltanisetta
The province comprises twenty-two
cities totalling an extension of 2,128.20 square kilometres.
Caltanissetta is much frequented by tourists, notably over Easter
period, celebrated with a series of long-waited events. The city
offers sites of both historical and naturalistic interest as
well as a much appreciated cuisine where especially renowned
is the sweet almond torrone. The old town clusters around Piazza
Garibaldi the junction point of the two main streets and
overlooked by the Town Hall (a former Carmelite convent), the
Cathedral and the Church of Saint Sebastian with, like the churches
of Sant'Agata and Santa Croce, a baroque dark-red colored front
elevation contrasting with the natural-stone color of the other
architecture. At the centre of the square rises the Fontana dei
Tritone (1956), based on a 1800's model, recreated by Michele
Tripisciano, a local artist. Beyond the Town Hall stands the
1600's Palazzo Moncada, its façade features carved corbels
in the form of human and animal figures.
