About Ragusa
The province of Ragusa, the smallest
and the youngest of the Sicilian provinces, covers an area of
roughly 1600 square kilometres in the south-western side of the
Island and has a total population of 300,000. The province's
vegetation is largely Mediterranean. Oaks grow in the mountainside;
while Oleander, Figs, Acanthus, Caper, and the Carob-tree can
be found in the plains areas. The fauna is mainly comprised of
wild rabbit, weasel and birds in the mountain side, rare birds
like the pink flamingo and the osprey in the marshy areas. The
Mediterranean climate is characterized by cold winters and hot
and dry summers in the mountainous and inland areas; while the
coast is milder and more humid. Visitors can take advantage of
the range of archaeological, artistic and naturalistic riches
of the province.
